The current shutdown does affect those who receive food stamps. 

According to this pdf from dss.mo.gov: 

Due to the partial federal government shutdown: 

• You will get your February Food Stamp benefit in January (one month early) 
• You will not get a Food Stamp benefit in February 
• You will need to carefully spend your benefit to make sure it lasts both months 
  

“What should I do if my Food Stamp verification is pending?” 

• If you have verification pending on a Food Stamp case, it must be submitted by 11:59 a.m. on Tuesday, January 15 to SNAP@dss.mo.gov or a FSD Resource Center 
  

“Will I get Food Stamp benefits in future months?” 

At this time we do not know if Food Stamp benefits for future months will be available. 

What can you do for your family? 

• Carefully spend your Food Stamp benefit so that your food supply will last 
• If you need more help, you can also reach out to your local food bank or contact the Family Support Division for help locating other resources that may be helpful to you and your family

TIL that in 1985, police engaged in a standoff with the black liberation group ‘MOVE’ at their home in Philadelphia. A massive firefight ensued in which the police used choppers to drop two C4 bombs on the roof. The fire destroyed 65 houses and 11 people died.

Half of the people who died in the bombing were children. The youngest of whom was only seven. Two hundred and fifty people were left homeless. When the bomb was dropped, the firefighters were ordered to stand back and not do anything to help. Police shot people as they tried to escape. And while the city apologized and called the bombing “unconscionable” the only person who was ever criminally charged in the affair was Ramona Africa, the sole adult survivor of the bombing.

Seriously, every single American should be required to learn about the MOVE bombing.

as of this afternoon (january 7 2019) at least 12 indigenous anti-pipeline activists at unis’tot’en camp in unceeded wet’suwet’en territory have been arrested by the rcmp. those arrested include molly wickham (the spokesperson of gitdumden clan) and an elder. these people will not be released, and are being taken to prince george, where they will stand before a justice of the peace. 

due to this event, it’s more important than ever to support water protectors and pipeline activsts. here is the official website for the unis’tot’en camp so you can educate yourself on the issue. also please donate if you can.
